Nelson- February 2010

The beautiful grounds of Nelson Suburbs were our next stop, somewhere I had been before. It was the venue of last year’s National High School tournament that brought back some great memories. The weather was again perfect and the next three days were no different.

Upon arrival it was clear that the support from the club to it’s players was huge. Over two thirds of the 62 players were in some way connected with the Nelson Suburbs club or surrounding areas. The standard of football right from the beginning from all ages was top-class. This meant that we could explore more areas of the game and not so much worry about their technique, which was already in them. After a very successful three-day course, everyone was dying to show off his or her skills in the World Cup and a similar format to Christchurch was set-up. The fierce competition was clear to see with all teams trying to win and impress. However with the willing to win, it was great to see that the spirit of the game is still being shown, and that is what it’s all about. The overall winners were Portugal from Group A, after a stalemate final, it went to penalties in which Portugal win 1-0 after your’s truly saved 3 consecutive penalties. So, Fabio Capello if your watching, unlike you I am English and always looking to start my international career.

Unlike Christchurch, the coaches were back on top form, a comfortable 3-0 win in the players vs. coaches final restored some faith in us. Thanks to the Nelson Suburbs coaches for their playing skills and willing-ness to beat 9 year olds.

After the teams first proper training last week in Christchurch, their first real test came in from of a “friendly“ match against the Nelson Suburbs Nike Cup team. After training with them for two days, the friendly banter was clear to see but it was great to see the 82 team change gears when it was time for their game. A nervous and shaky opening 5 minutes was followed by the best football that Richie, Chris and myself had seen from the group since the naming of the squad. Slick passes and movement play, aloud us to be 1-0 up at the interval of the 1st third with Avery’s stunner from 25 yards out. It should have easily been 2-0 with Joash’s shot smashing the crossbar. However the rest of the game didn’t match up to the opening, the bond between the Nike Cup team started to show and the game eventually finished 6-2. Connor Ceci’s consolation goal at the end, a bright spot in a disappointing finish to the game. A big screen replay was shown the next day, which was a laugh for both teams. On a more important note, ponciest boots award has been taken from defending champion Connor Ceci and passed onto Furkan Omer, a striker from Nelson Suburbs. Not even Crisitiano Ronaldo would wear them.

On the final day, the coaches and helpers of the clinic put on a BBQ, after a swim and quality food players somehow found the energy to play beach football for the good part of 2 hours. Brazilian goalkeeping coach Daniel found himself right at home on the sandy beaches. Defiantly the highlight of the three days to go along with the game.

Congrats to the new additions from Nelson Suburbs. (Fox Slotemaker and Harry Tod- Smith) who will add greatly to our overall nucleus of our team and will be major contributors not only for Spain, but also with us going forward.

All of us at 82 would especially like to thank Gary and Duncan and the rest of the people involved at Nelson Suburbs who made our stay magnificent. Also special thanks to Renee Kampman who put up with all of us at The Academy from Central Otago and all the other billets for their hospitality.

Next stop, 82 first adventure to a foreign land….

……………Hamilton in the North Island.

Christchurch Tour- February 2010

For the first time in The Academy’s short history, 82 was on tour and the first stop was Parklands FC in Christchurch.

A combination of The 82 Football Academy and Parklands coaches joined together with the 63 eager players on the 11th of February. Some commented that it was strange being away from Queenstown and Jack’s Point. Another first was mixing both Parklands players and The Academy’s players. During the three days they were able to share both friendships and experiences with each other. This allowed the clinic to run smoothly and be a great first experience outside of Queenstown.

After a very successful three day clinic, the main event, The World Cup, was set up. With so many players participating, a different format was used with two groups of five teams. Uruguay from Group One was victorious and faced the mixed all-star coaches’ team. For the first time in the coaches short and injury filled performances they were beaten in somewhat dubious circumstances. A late goal by Uruguay put the game into penalties; Sam Phillip slotted the winning pen home for a famous win. We blame the rotation system, (Parklands coaches).

All but one of the Barcelona squad arrived in Christchurch with the inclusion of Connor Irvine, a very talented all-round footballer, new to The Academy. The squad was very excited with the tactical play that they had not yet experienced at The Academy before. The response from the players was fantastic and the coaches are looking forward to seeing the progress that the squad makes from now to the start of the MIC tournament and their first game in Nelson against the Nike Cup team.

A highlight for the younger kids was watching the Wellington Phoenix win their last game of the season to guarantee a home playoff game. An 82 Football Academy sweepstake was set up with prizes going for correct guesses on final score, stadium attendance and time of first goal. This made for a very intense football viewing; however some of us were too concerned with stacking coke cans. No mention of names, (Sam Flatt and Connor Irvine). Quality castle boys!

A special thanks to the parents of academy kids and others who were kind enough to house the kids during their stay in Christchurch and for Parklands FC for allowing us to play on their fields.

Next Stop Nelson…..
…… Looking forward to the hot weather
